The orchestra is challenging members of the public to send it a 30-second "groove" - anything from a guitar riff to a rhythm bashed out on pots and pans with suggestions on how it might be adapted for a 45-piece orchestra.
The hook will then be performed by the Philharmonia, lead by its new conductor, Finnish maestro Esa-Pekka Salonen.
"The wilder and more imaginative the better. This project really is open to everyone, regardless of age or musical ability," said a spokesman.
A visit to the Philharmonia's newly launched Myspace site proves they are in earnest. Their virtual "friends" include Jamie Cullum and jazz crooner Corinne Bailey Rae.
