THE WELSH Assembly is to provide a grant of pound;26.8 million to increase the number of people who speak Welsh. The extra money will be allocated over three years, from 2003. Schemes it will cover include bilingual nurseries, language-learning sabbaticals for teachers and pound;1,200 “golden hellos” for each teacher who trains to teach in Welsh. The aim is that an additional 5 per cent of the population will be able to speak Welsh by 2011.
