AN EXTRA Pounds 22 million will be earmarked for improving security in schools, Estelle Morris, the school standards minister announced this week. Local authorities can allocate funds to schools which need security cameras, keypad entry systems, fencing or staff training - including self-defence courses for staff and governors.
The previous government set up a working group on school security after the murder of headteacher Philip Lawrence. The group’s report was published in May 1996 and its recommendations were endorsed by Labour.
