More than 1,400 schools a year are deliberately set on fire, usually by pupils or ex-pupils aged between 10 and 16, at a cost of Pounds 43 million, according to research by the Arson Prevention Bureau.

The bureau launched a campaign yesterday with George Howarth, junior Home Office minister, to help solve the problem by providing all schools with a booklet on how to combat arson.
