Labour’s further education spokesman Bryan Davies this week accused the Government of wasting Pounds 83 million on failed efforts to improve the standards of national vocational qualifications.
The total, revealed in an answer to a parliamentary question, has been spent since 1988. Ministers have committed another Pounds 7 million to further comprehensive revision following a damning official report by industrialist Gordon Beaumont. He said NVQs were “marred by complex, jargon-ridden language”. Mr Davies said: “Considerable public money has been spent on the development of a system of vocational qualifications that is badly flawed and poorly understood.”
