Paul Mackney, general secretary of Natfhe, became somewhat jittery that, with the departure of Doug McAvoy from the NUT, he will now be the longest-serving general secretary of a rank-and file teachers’ union.

One of his able deputies, Dan Taubman, commented “He’s right to be amazed when you think of Natfhe’s track record for ditching general secretaries.”

Three heads rolled in succession at election time, those of Peter Dawson, Geoff Wolf and John Akker.

What’s the secret of Mackney’s success? Truck no opposition, then you don’t need an election.
