At last, a boost for the much maligned geography field trip. Alan Johnson, Education Secretary, will outline the Government’s commitments to alfresco education when he launches a Manifesto for Learning Outside the Classroom on Tuesday.

The Institute for Outdoor Learning, one of the signatories, is campaigning to reduce the bureaucracy associated with excursions.

The institute believes trips are crucial for building team skills and confidence. It wants greater numbers to take part and is lobbying the Government to get school trip programmes monitored by Ofsted.

“We believe the manifesto has the potential to significantly improve outcomes for children and young people,” said Steve Lenartowicz, chairman of the group.
