The battle between Hillary Clinton and Barack Obama is already tense, with both sides exchanging political blows as they strive to gain the Democratic presidential nomination.

Clearly, neither needs to court controversy at this stage. But Mr Obama's name has been dragged into a row over Colin Saltry, a high-school pupil from Pennsylvania, who has been forced to step down as head of his senior class.

Saltry's crime: skipping a gym lesson to see the presidential wannabe during a campaign stop at a local restaurant.

Forward-thinking Saltry and Joey Daniel, a classmate at Scranton High, got Mr Obama to sign excuse slips to give to their teachers. But it wasn't enough to appease the school principal, who told Saltry to quit his position, according to the Scranton Times- Tribune website.

Proving that some young people are still interested in politics, however, Saltry has not been cowed. His Facebook group is continuing to campaign for his own ascendancy to the national presidency "sometime in the next 40 years".
