Mum dumps school over Joseph row

- A furious mum pulled her daughter out of school because she didn’t want her to be taught the story of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolour Dreamcoat. Kimberley Wright claims the biblical tale is too violent for seven-year-old Rachel, who had been told by teachers to draw a picture of Joseph being thrown into a pit.

SNP `vindicated’ over tuition charges’

- The Scottish government claimed its position on tuition fees was “vindicated” after figures showed the country’s universities have been protected from the worst of a UK-wide downturn in applicant numbers. Figures showed a 1.1 per cent fall in the number of Scots hoping to study in their home country. English applicants dropped 5.6 per cent.

Five-year-olds seek therapy

- Children as young as five were among hundreds of youngsters who sought counselling in one Glasgow primary school. Therapists from charity project Place2Be, which helps troubled children at school, saw 320 pupils in a year at the school in the east end of the city - equating to about 70 per cent of pupils at the primary.

Council fined over child data lapses

- A council has been handed the biggest fine yet for disclosing sensitive personal data after sending details on children and their carers to the wrong people five times last year. The Information Commissioner’s Office fined Midlothian Council pound;140,000 over the breaches, which it said caused “serious upset” to the children’s families.

Vocational courses dropped from school league tables

- Thousands of vocational qualifications - including courses in fish husbandry and nail technology - will be stripped out of school league tables. More than 3,000 qualifications regarded as equivalent to GCSEs in current league tables will be reduced to 125. Just 70 will count towards the main performance measure of five A* to C grades.
