Call for our politicians to unite on Scottish studies

Leading academics, artists, writers and poets have united to fight “depressing” attempts to politicise the teaching of Scottish studies in secondaries. The group wants to see cross-party support for Scottish studies. In recent weeks, the Scottish Liberal Democrats and the Scottish Conservatives have both questioned the motives of the SNP in promoting the subject.

Almost 7,000 children were victims of domestic violence in their own homes over the festive period, figures show. Police recorded how many youngsters were caught up in domestic violence in December and January. Charity Children 1st fears more than 30,000 children in Scotland are witnessing or being subjected to domestic abuse regularly.

Cheeseburgers same as sex and violence say SNP

Adverts for cheeseburgers should join sex, violence and bad language and be banned from TV before 9pm, the Scottish government says. The SNP claims that making it illegal to show adverts for foods with high fat, sugar or salt content before the 9pm sex and violence watershed will protect the health of children and reduce obesity. Public health minister Michael Matheson called on the UK government to introduce such a ban.

Classroom chaos as new exam system is put back

A controversial overhaul of Scotland’s teaching system has been dealt a fresh blow as it emerged schools will be able to the delay the introduction of the new exams. Education secretary Michael Russell announced councils could hold off implementing the new exams for a year amid concerns time was needed to train teacher and staff could face “unmanageable workloads”. Mr Russell is to unveil a support package to restore confidence in the beleaguered new system.

Student who spied on gay roommate guilty of hate crime

A US student accused of spying on his gay roommate has been convicted of a hate crime after the victim threw himself to his death off a bridge. Indian-born Dharun Ravi, 20, could now face a 10-year prison term and be deported. Prosecutors said Ravi set up a webcam in his room at Rutgers University in New Jersey in September 2010 and captured Tyler Clementi kissing another man. Within days, Mr Clementi realised he had been watched and jumped from the George Washington Bridge.
