Primary skills

I take exception to the claim in the article "Set to make a comeback", (TES, January 27) that "one of the main obstacles" to teaching children beyond level 5 is teacher knowledge and that "few primary teachers are qualified enough to teach that far".

Teaching is a graduate profession and every teacher will have one or two specialisms which heshe would be quite capable for teaching up to, and beyond, level 7.

Most primary teachers would be capable of teaching to levels 6 and 7 with little difficulty.

Moreover, they often possess teaching skills which secondary teachers have never developed.
