Private inspiration

YOUR excellent whistle-stop history of independent education is timely and inspiring.

For far too long, the picture of private schools has been dominated by ghosts of the past, by images which once may have had relevance, but which have all but disappeared from today's independent schools.

You emphatically reminded us of the vital role and child-friendly nature of a modern independent school, effectively settng the scene for what we should all hope will be a better-informed and less polemical debate in the years ahead.

"Bastions for the elite?" Not any more, but, rather, schools that are happy, open and forward-looking, serving pupils of all abilities, and all backgrounds.
