Privatisation of SEN will add to disadvantage

With reference to your news story “Call for SEN schools to be handed to private providers” (November 26), I wholeheartedly agree with the think-tank proposal to reserve SEN funding for those pupils who present the most severe and complex needs who, of course, will require careful describing and unfortunately defining as a discrete group for essential administrative purposes.

However, I am incredulous at the suggestion of privatising this area of education. How could such a change reduce the postcode lottery that SEN services are charged with? Where is the evidence to suggest that such a move would “drive up performance”? What would address the current imbalance of the most articulate parents securing disproportionate amounts of benefits from limited and indeed dwindling specialist resources?

Think again, think-tank.
