Professional body delays the deadline for registration

THE registration of England’s 440,000 teachers with their new professional body has been put back four months. The Government has allowed the General Teaching Council to delay the date by which all teachers should be registered with it from February 1 to June 1. The decision also means the council will not take charge of disiplining teachers for misconduct or incompetence until the same date, which is three months later than planned. The council had been unhappy about requiring teachers to register with it before telling them the level of the council’s subscription, which is expected to be decided at its next meeting on February 13.
