“Without all due respect” presents statistical evidence for teachers’ attitudes to their profession and examples of politicians’ criticisms, but Joe Public’s “impressions” seem to be anecdotal. It would be interesting to ascertain through research if the public’s impressions are their own views - based on ignorance, stereotypes and hearsay - or if they are shaped by the media. The simplistic approach of most political speeches is perpetuated by the media. Screaming headlines tar all with the same brush, leaving those in the profession to pick up the pieces.

As author Tom Bennett points out, when did anybody ask teachers what they want or feel, apart from indirectly through so-called consultations that the government usually ignores?

Philip Parkin, General secretary, Voice: the union for education professionals.
