Professionalism is just the point

Keith Atton (TES, May 20) has missed the point. Of course we can all generate a multitude of job titles, but what is at stake is the devaluation of qualified teacher status. Qualified teachers should be covered only by qualified teachers.

At its most recent meeting in April, the National Association of Head Teachers passed a motion unanimously: that there should be "teacher for teacher" cover and that it should be funded by the Government.

Mike Brennan's NHS analogy (Letters, TES, June 10) is most applicable to the workforce re-modelling fiasco. Why are representatives from both the Department for Education and Skills and the General Teaching Council for England so mute on this vital issue: the maintenance and development of teachers' professionalism?
