THE GENERAL Teaching Council is being created to act as a single voice for the profession.

It will be independent of the Government, financed by contributions from teachers and run by a board with a majority of teachers.

With control over a national register of teachers, it will have the power to bar people from the profession, set entry requirements and work towards increasing standards in the classroom.

It will be invited to give advice on the induction year for newly-qualified teachers, and will establish standards of conduct and advise on standards of medical fitness to teach.

The GTC, and particularly its chairman, will work to promote teaching as a career, raising the status and standards of teachers in the community.

The closing date to register to vote in council elections is December 15, and voting will be held next February and March. Results are due to be announced in April and a council will be set upon September 1.
