A proposal by the mayor of Rome to name a road in the centre of the capital after a fascist education minister has caused a storm of protest. Guiseppe Bottai, who took part in the march on Rome in 1922, and became the first governor of Addis Ababa in 1936, was minister from 1936 to 1943.
The intention of the mayor, Francesco Rutelli - an exponent of the Green party - was “to look at the history of Rome with serenity”.
For the moment, though it looks as if the road in question, a wide avenue near Villa Borghese, will be keeping its old name: Esedra Pietro Njegos, poeta nazionale montenegrino 1813-1851.
