Protection measures

Lecturers' union NATFHE has called for new measures to protect people from low-income backgrounds when the Government abolishes student grants and introduces university tuition fees from next year.

The union also wants Sir Ron Dearing's proposals to widen participation in higher education and improve access funds to be given top priority.

NATFHE's call echoes Sir Ron's own stance on his report into HE. He has argued that action to encourage people into education is essential to offset the deterrent effect of fees.
