KATHMANDU: An estimated 50,000 schoolchildren, teachers and parents marched through the streets of Kathmandu last week in protest at the disruption to their education caused by Maoist activities.
The march was organised by the Private and Boarding Schools Organisation of Nepal and the children came from 175 priate schools in the capital. They were protesting against a plan of the All Nepal National Free Students Union - which is widely believed to have close links to the Maoist movement- to close schools for a month. The union is demanding that they ban the national anthem and drop Sanskrit from the curriculum.
