A crisis-torn parents’ organisation has rejected moves to wind it up in favour of a relaunch.

The proposals came from the interim manager of the National Confederation of Parent-Teacher Associations who was appointed by the Charity Commission in the wake of its damning investigation into the organisation.

Richard Hill gave three options to the 60 NCPTA members last weekend: wind up the 42-year-old organisation; limit its actions to providing school function insurance, or undergo a full relaunch later this year.

He said: “We had positive and very constructive discussions. I have every confidence that the NCPTA will emerge from this exercise with a proper operational structure which will make it far stronger.”

Last year a Charity Commission report concluded that the NCPTA had “no overall strategy or direction” and “had allowed itself to be side-tracked by internal disputes which created rifts within the organisation”.

It also called for the resignations of three key officers on the grounds that they may have benefited from positions of trust. The commission later authorised their continued employment, but treasurer Andrew Smetham has since stepped down. “I decided with a chartered accountant at the helm I could move on and devote my time to other business,” he said.
