Public cost of private cash

I read with interest your articles (TES, September 26) on troubles with private finance initiative deals. Here in Haringey we already have our long list of horror stories relating to a PFI scheme for our secondary schools.

There was inadequate choice for school governors at the start of the process, the lost teaching days and the lack of finance for moving furniture in the middle of our schools programme. Now we have local people up in arms over construction access and floodlighting proposals. One wonders if we'll ever get there!

The plus side is of course we get shiny new school buildings which are badly needed, but the burden to the community has been larger than expected both financially and in practice.
