Some pupils still “do not understand” the consequences of taking mobile phones into exams, Ofqual has warned.

In a letter to heads published today, chief regulator Sally Collier shared guidance on potential risks to the smooth delivery of the exams taken this year.

These are named as exam package security; timetable clashes; mobile phones and smartwatches, and exam paper leaks.

On the use of electronic devices, Ms Collier warned that some pupils “do not understand” the consequences of taking phones and smartwatches into exams.

She said: “As you know, mobile phones and smartwatches must be switched off and stored away from students during exams.

“Students need to know, in advance, that they must not take these items into the exam hall.

“We know that exams officers put a lot of work into getting this message across, but still some students do not understand the possible consequences of breaching this rule.”
