Pupils will no longer be able to fail national curriculum tests

* The QCA has reacted furiously to newspaper reports over the weekend that pupils will no longer be able to fail national curriculum tests.

Reports in the Sunday Telegraph and the Daily Mail said pupils attaining only the lowest level in national curriculum tests would no longer be given an F for "fail", but an N for "nearly".

However, the QCA said the tests had never included an "F" grade.

The "N" grade has been a part of the grading system for the tests since they were introduced in 1994. Guidance sent to markers this year had not set out any fundamental changes to the grading system of the type the reports had claimed, it said.
