THREE budding historians have won a trip to Washington in a celebrity-backed essay contest celebrating the close relationship between the UK and America during the Second World War.

Actors Tom Hanks and Ralph Fiennes were among those who read the efforts of hundreds of pupils in the competition rganised by US ambassador Philip Lader and Education Secretary David Blunkett.

The winners were Jenny Steer, 16, of Stroud high school, Gloucestershire, Jordan Skittrall, 15, of St Edmund’s College, Ware, Hertfordshire, and Christopher Hassan-Houghton, 14, of Kelvin Hall School, Hull.
