The benefits of keeping pets in schools will be discussed at a conference in Leicester on Tuesday. Steve Goody, director of companion animal welfare at the Blue Cross, said: “We are becoming a more litigious nation and it may be the easiest option not to keep animals at all. Our concern is that children are being deprived of the opportunity to learn and benefit from the experience of pets in the classroom.”

Details of the conference and a book, Children and Pets: A guide for parents, teachers and therapists, are available from SCAS on 01993 825597
