Questions over ‘no excuses’ discipline

I was surprised to see myself directly quoted in your cover story on school discipline (“More than ties, shoes and hair”, 11 November), my comment having been lifted, I believe, from a post on a website. If I had been asked directly for my opinion on this important subject, I would have agreed that order and calm are essential elements of a good schooling, but that, as the piece itself suggested, important questions hang over some of the more extreme, military-style approaches currently being employed.
