The University of Ulster has distanced itself from its chancellor, Rabbi Julia Neuberger, after she strongly criticised Northern Ireland’s divided education system.

In her speech at the opening of an integrated school just outside Belfast, Rabbi Neuberger said single-religion schools were sectarian and should not be fully fundedby the Government, which should instead provide 100 per centcash support for the integrated schools.

The Council for Catholic Maintained Schools immediately demanded an apology.

The University of Ulster said in a statement “The views reported were unequivocally not the views of the university. We deeply regret any offence that has been caused.”

Rabbi Neuberger said that she was deeply concerned at the response to her reported remarks and was planning to “clarify” her speech.
