I was mortified to read your account of my talk at last week’s Further Education Development Agency conference. I made no attack on the New Deal funding regime.

I did, however, urge colleges to: devote adequate resources to winning a full role in the New Deal; be clear about the use of the various funding streams; set up tight accounting arrangements; and keep things as simple as possible.

My intention and, I had understood, my effect, was to help to encourage and prepare colleges to make a strong contribution to a vital new initiative.
