Last week’s national Enquire conference on special needs mediation featured the usual turn by Tommy MacKay, the vaudeville psychologist. Introduced with the words “you’ll find his biographical details in the conference pack”, MacKay protested: “But I didn’t send you any biographical details.”

“Don’t worry,” he was told, “we got it off the Internet.” And so MacKay began: “I strenuously deny the biographical details.”

At least this time, he was relieved to see Nicol Stephen, Deputy Education Minister, there to share the platform. At a previous conference he had to step in at short notice after Stephen pulled out to attend the birth of his baby.

“Unfortunately,” quipped MacKay, “I didn’t have the foresight to arrange something similar myself.”
