Sure Start centres should be raising awareness of the impact of domestic violence on children. Government research recommends that staff at Sure Start centres, which offer childcare and family support for under-fives in deprived areas, should have a basic knowledge of the issues around domestic abuse. They should be able to recognise and query signs of abuse, as well as having a knowledge of relevant legalities. And staff should be able to minimise risks by facilitating discussions between family members.
