Recruitment crisis questioned

Headlines about the shortage of science teachers have left some confused newly-qualified science teachers asking"Crisis? What crisis?" as they search fortheir first job.

Biology graduate Farzana Shah, aged 22, of Manchester, has just completed a PGCE at Birmingham University. She said she had been fruitlessly applying for jobs since February and couldn't even find supply work. Five biologists on her course finished without jobs, as did several physicists and chemists.

"Why is the Government looking for more science teachers when there are so many out there who who haven't got a job?" she asked.
