You can use them as lump sums or monthly salary payments for staff you are particularly anxious to keep. Or you can pay them as golden handcuffs: withholding cash for up to three years and paying it as a lump sum at the end.
Treat student teachers professionally. The head of a big school can be a distant figure, but time spent with them, treating them as colleagues about to embark on a shared endeavour, is worthwhile. It might just make the difference if one of them is thinking of giving up, and it may result in one making a mental note to apply for a job with you. They'll also take the message back to others.
