The democratic process in the Educational Institute of Scotland has produced results unlikely to bring huzzas from the Moray Place headquarters. Elections for the Glasgow local association have boosted the Socialist Workers Party representation on its committee of management from two to five.

Veteran activist Jimmy Ross of Woodside Secondary, Helen Blair, King’s Park Secondary, and Bob Fotheringham, Bellahouston Academy, join previous members Jock Morris of Eastbank Academy and Lesley Atkins of Bellahouston.

Jimmy Ross says that an immediate aim will be to campaign against any “sell-out” on Higher Still.

“We also believe that teachers must waken up to the threat to salaries and conditions if the Millennium Review results in these matters being devolved to the local authorities.”

Some 70 per cent of the EIS’s 6,000 Glasgow members did not bother to vote in the elections, which were topped by well known members of the national council Alana Ross and Liz Vann. Primary teachers took five of the first six places, with former national president Ian McCalman, a learning support teacher at Smithycroft Secondary, coming a less than spectacular eighth.
