It was depressing to see the wheel being reinvented 10 years after the gimmicks of Assessment for Learning were initially rolled out (Review, October 1). BBC2‘s two-part mini-series The Classroom Experiment featured Professor Dylan Wiliam extolling the benefits of modified traffic lights, whiteboards and lollipop sticks as the way forward for teaching and learning in the 21st century.

Hopefully this example will not deter those teachers who have moved on in their pedagogy. Rather than claiming “percentage success rates” for following a prescribed code, teachers have realised that the best results are the product of pupil involvement in real, co-constructed learning relationships.
