Plans to reorganise schools in the Whitchurch area of Cardiff have been agreed by the city council, despite huge public opposition. If given the go-ahead by the Assembly government, Whitchurch High - Wales' largest secondary - will downsize, and two English-medium primaries will be replaced by smaller Welsh and English-medium schools. Councillors also agreed to consult on proposals to merge Glyn Derw High School and Michaelston Community College to create a smaller secondary. There are around 8,850 surplus places in the city's schools.
