Your editorial last week misses the point somewhat. While you are right in saying that independence is not an end in itself, the only way that most independent schools can continue to deliver the excellent education which is their objective, without state interference, is by not accepting state money and not becoming embroiled in state-controlled schemes. This then requires them to charge parents fees. Parents understand this, and those who want to educate their child outside of the state and can afford to do so are willing to pay. For those who cannot afford the fees, independents do their utmost to offer bursaries and fee assistance. Our schools refute the idea that they exist to educate the wealthy.
