At Wandsworth CLC they use Roland GK2A Midi pickups on guitar and bass and the Roland GI20 DI box, Creative external USB soundcards and old Sony Vaio laptops which they already had in the department. They also have an Encore bass and guitar, Yamaha electronic drum kit and a standard Yamaha keyboard.

"The software costs us pound;200 per instrument per year, so that's Pounds 800," says Simon Elledge. "Then there's the hardware: pound;100 each for the keyboard, bass and guitar, pound;150 on the drum pads and pound;300 each for the bass and guitar Midi set-up - so that's a one-off cost of around Pounds 1,000.

"At the moment we're running about 24 kids through a week and charging them pound;1 each. It's something that is within the reach of most schools - we don't even have a particularly large space."

The London Grid for Learning is offering all the capital's 2,600 state schools access to an initial 30 hours of Gigajam free. Gigajam is also working on similar deals around the country.
