The science film competition is just one part of the Planet SciCast project, which aims to promote the importance of science demonstrations as a means of inspiring young people and encouraging them to take a greater interest in science. The project will also involve in-school training on how to make short films of science demonstrations, a web resource of all the films with write ups of each experiment and discussion on whose responsibility it is to stimulate interest among the next generation of scientists.
The competition is open to everyone and the organisers are interested in hearing opinions on which film categories should be included. Prizes are yet to be announced, but the team hopes to receive business sponsorship.
Anyone interested in taking part should visit the Planet Science website for pointers on filmmaking and to view a selection of films that have already been received. These include Elephant’s Toothpaste - an entry from the Glasgow Science Centre made in the style of a silent movie.
