These two revision books are for pupils who expect to obtain grades A to C at GCSE (higher tier). They can be used in class, or as private revision materials at home, because limited copying of the cassette is permitted.
After an introduction to the pupil in English, the rest of the book is in the target language, using instructions likely to appear in the examination. Each of the 12 units begins with listening materials.
Both French and German recordings are excellent, the language is spoken at a reasonable speed with no inaudible murmurings on vital words. There is a transcript at the back of the book.
The listening work is followed by five pages of reading, writing and speaking materials, a page of grammar exercises and a useful page of vocabulary. Exam tips and study strategies are given in English at the bottom of pages where appropriate. There is a comprehensive grammar section at the back of the book, as well as answers to all exercises and four revision tests. These books are for self-motivated pupils, keen for exam success, but the book is nonetheless carefully structured with less-demanding tasks at the beginning of each unit.
Despite its serious approach, the material is attractively presented with colour on every page and a varied layout. Both books offer a thorough revision of GCSE topics and are a useful check for the teacher to ensure everything has been covered. Most activities require a good knowledge of grammar and a wide range of vocabulary and are most suitable for 16-year-olds.
