Duncan Rice, principal of Aberdeen University, was clearly not reading his speech like an automaton when he made his keynote address at The TESS Perth College conference.
He was striding confidently through a phrase about the importance of universities “finding our niche and deciding where in the seamless robe we want it to be”.
Then he suddenly paused to exclaim that he had just committed “the most ghastly mixed metaphor - you cannot have a niche in a seamless robe”.
