A TURF war over the role of colleges and community education in promoting lifelong learning has broken out in Glasgow. John Wheatley College, which serves some of the most disadvantaged areas in the east end, says community education’s role in adult education should be diminished and its remit for youth work transferred to schools and voluntary organisations. Glasgow, meanwhile, has condemned the Government’s Green Paper on lifelong learning for dismissing community education’s role in developing community-based opportunities.
