Right placement at the right time

THE On Course supplement (TES, March 21) was a useful overview of continuing professional development opportunities for teachers. It did, however, have one omission - the Professional Development Placement (PDP) scheme.

This scheme allows teachers, lecturers and non-teachers, who advise young people on careers or progression into work, to spend at least one day in a placement in a business in order to develop themselves personally andor develop the curriculum andor the school.

Funds come from the Department for Education and Skills through the Learning and Skills Council to the local Education Business Links Consortia, and for the coming financial year more than pound;4 million is available in England. There have been additional funds through the National Education Business Partnership.

As the Government's agenda increasingly places emphasis on a vocational curriculum, there has never been more reason for teachers to take up the opportunities the PDP scheme can offer. Staff interested should contact their local Education Business Links Consortium.
