A blast from the past in the letters page of the Sunday Telegraph as John Sutton, long lost general secretary of the Secondary Heads Association, entered a long-running debate about the rights and wrongs of, um, caravanning.

Mr Sutton rebuked a fellow correspondent who had criticised caravannists for clogging up the roads. “I do tow a ‘one-bedroom flat’ for my holidays and occasional weekends and do so especially to allow our family pet to share such times rather than have him in kennels.

“It also allows us to holiday in the more remote parts of Britain where accommodation is sparse but the environment restful.” Sounds idyllic.
