East Lothian museum curators who were inspired by Tolkien’s The Hobbit and The Lord of the Rings to create A Land of Shadows are continuing to tour the show, which aims to stir upper primary school classes to try creative writing and craft work. Children dress up in costume and enter a maze with a Hobbit house, a rune table, a dragon and a giant spider. The three-hour schools sessions include amulet and spider making, cracking a rune code and writing a group poem.

The show is at Hawick Museum until September 28, then the Old Gala House in Galashiels (Oct 6-Nov15), before going on to Peebles Museum (Nov 24-Jan 16).
