RIP, RE

https://www.tes.com/magazine/archive/rip-re

It is with great sadness that I announce the death of RE (at least in my school). Despite years of battling against pupils’ and parents’ prejudice, RE had become a spokesman for multiculturalism and a speaker for moral rights. Therefore, it is with great regret that we have lost the voice of the unborn child and the conscience of humanity.

How did it happen? After a long battle against the English Baccalaureate, RE has failed to pull through. Instead, geography and history have become overburdened by pupils who live in fear of university rejection.

I will never get over the death of RE. Tortured by Ofsted and finished off by David Cameron, my days as an RE teacher are numbered. Knowing that I would end up being given whatever subjects were left over on the timetable, I had no choice but to resign and move on.

Helen Lay.
