Rise and fall of union support

The National Union of Teachers has reinforced its position as Britain's biggest teaching union with a rise of nearly 7 per cent from 217,224 to 232,280 in the past year, Trades Union Congress membership figures show.

The National Association of Schoolmasters Union of Women Teachers saw a 5.75 per cent rise from 200,257 in 2002 to 211,779. But the Association of Teachers and Lecturers registered a 2.7 per cent fall from 113,161 to 110,083.
