Rising star - Suzanne Walton

Where?

She's assistant headteacher and head of music at Whitehill Junior School in Hitchin, Hertfordshire.

Why?

When Suzanne started at Whitehill Junior School back in the late Nineties, the school was going through a difficult time. But in the 11 years she has been on board, Suzanne has been instrumental in helping to raise it from its troubles.

She began her career as a teacher and worked her way up to become a valued member of the school leadership team.

What she started as a small school choir grew to an orchestra with the school now well-known for its commitment to music and the arts.

Sue has also grown Whitehill's profile locally with events like the Hitchin Festival and Shakespeare in the Park. On a national level, she has enabled pupils to take part in performances at the Albert Hall and involved them in the National Gallery's Take one Picture scheme. She completed her NPQH qualification in 2007.

Nominated by?

Fran Bradshaw, headteacher, who says: "Sue is just fabulous. Not only is she calm and professional, she makes things happen. She has helped grow the school into the glorious place it is now by using music and the arts to give the children a sense of identity and purpose. There is no question she'd make a great headteacher."
