Portlethen Academy in Aberdeenshire has again woven together religious, moral and philosophical studies with English in its second annual Threads in the Tartan conference.

The event, held last week, explored racism, discrimination, prejudice and stereotypes through discussion work and case studies of the American civil rights activist Martin Luther King and others.

Students had been studying the poetry of Jackie Kay, a Scottish writer born to a Scottish mother and Nigerian father, who was adopted by a white family shortly after her birth and brought up in Glasgow. Her work deals mainly with issues of cultural identity. Ms Kay was the school’s main guest speaker at the conference and led a workshop for Advanced Higher English pupils.

S3 pupils studying RMPS made short promotional films, premiered at the conference, based on an anti-racism or diversity theme, inspired by work in class and input from visits by Grampian Police. The school plans to enter them for the annual Anne Frank Award, organised by Grampian Racial Equality Council.

This year, the event is being sponsored by the Research Institute of Irish and Scottish Studies at Aberdeen University as part of the continuing professional development work it initiated for teachers connected with the Word Festival.

A DVD of the day will be distributed as a teaching resource to primaries and other secondary schools in Aberdeenshire, initially through the Glow network.
