* Roger Stewart, head of education in Fife, died suddenly last weekend at the age of 59. Mr Stewart is a recent contributor to The TES Scotland pages on slimmer school management and has been instrumental in introducing the faculty system in secondaries. He was previously education director in West Lothian and a former secondary head in Livingston.

Mr Stewart moved to his native Fife nearly three years ago with a remit to restructure central education services and lift school attainment. A spokesman said he “led from the front”.
